Governments / Belief Groups can ruin banks a bit better than Money can, oddly enough. I used to think money controlled everything directly.
Money has an inherent power property, but that property is spread out over large groups by large groups. (think about actual preference / choice). Focusing on money is probably the wrong way to think about control (you are thinking about being controlled by a few grams of real / borrowed gold?). It may be beneficial to think about currency rather than a single source of power (yeah, money is power). Currency to me (as it's probably not defined), is where there is something you have, that someone else wants, all the while wanting something they have.
Governments are small groups that reside over much smaller common linked groups (not small at all in number) (think: political party / belief). Which means I think, a small group of similar like people control a huge number if individuals who don't think like each other, but have common number / type of goals / desires, on average.
Belief groups are large groups that reside over much smaller common linked groups (think: Churches / Traditions)?
* edit: half of the thoughts are there, the other half.. well...
